How to Deal with the Public Schools’ Declining Funds
In the midst of our current fiscal situation, our government has done a great job of spending a lot of money it doesn’t have. Our country is in more debt than ever, so therefore Big Brother has to do his best to accumulate as much tax money as possible, without too many new taxes, so of course the best way to decrease our debt with out making taxpayers too angry is to simply spend less money. For reasons I don’t understand, our public schools seem to be one of the first places that our government want to cut spending from. If we must cut funding from our schools, I’d like to argue what we can afford to lose, and what must be kept. I believe that Physical Education is unnecessary and a waste of school time. I believe it is important that we keep our classrooms air conditioned or heated in order to promote a more comfortable learning environment. I also strongly feel that all janitorial services need to be kept well funded.
Physical Education is probably the most transparent of all courses. Students who are out of shape and not interested in physical activity are not going to suddenly see the flaws in their lifestyles and become more active due do PE. For students who are already active and in good shape, PE is just a free credit. I feel it is a waste of valuable school time and a waste of valuable taxpayers’ money. I believe we should eliminate this course, but keep after school sports so that students can choose if they want to be involved or not. If it is necessary, I believe it is not too much to ask that these extracurricular activities be funded in part by the students or their parents. Paying a coach’s salary is very expensive and if a student wants to be part of a team, they should help out in paying their salary. It may not seem fair, but it’s better than taking money from classrooms.
Electricity is a very expensive resource, and our schools must choose wisely about how they use it, But the last thing we should do is eliminate space heaters and air conditioning units. In order for our students to learn optimally, a comfortable room temperature is vital. we should do more, however, to keep teachers from using such machines when unnecessary. I believe we should have simultaneously controlled thermostats, where only one unit controls the temperature of every classroom in the entire school to keep teachers from abusing their power. Teachers sure like to use up hundreds of dollars of electricity in their classrooms, where at the same time they probably wouldn’t do the same thing in their own homes, where they have to pay the bill.
It seems that many teachers across the nation are having to vacuum and disinfect their own classrooms because one or two of the custodians got laid off. This is one of those things I can’t seem to understand, because a teacher’s salary exceeds a custodian’s. We need our academic warriors to spend their time focusing on the education of our children, and not cleaning up after them. By having them do janitorial work we are wasting more many than we are saving. It is extremely important that we keep our schools as sanitary as possible so that students will be more conscious about their education, and so they can stay healthy. It’s no question that scholars will perform better in a clean environment rather than a dirty one.
The basic message I’m trying to send is that if public schools are going to have limited budgets, they must focus on the things that have the biggest effect on our students psychologically. There are many programs that are nice to have, and may have some small benefit, but it is common sense that if we are going to lose some of them, that we must keep the ones that really matter. Children are our future and how their brains develop during their years in grade school will change the course of their life and have an enormous effect on the future of our economy.

I totally agree with your point that teachers are distracted by the budget cuts and unable to complete their job. However,I can't agree with the part of air-conditioning. I am having a Japanese class which starts at 7:00pm. The classroom doesn't have air-conditioning! It is really distracting students and the teachers . School thinks it is okay to shut down the air conditioning on the evening classes, but in fact they don't really know what really happen in the classrooms.
ReplyDeleteYou know more vocabularies than i do,but you might want to check our grammar in tutoring center; there's just a few mistakes. I think you should clarify what your point is in the "Electricity" part, because you haven't state the main sentence on top of the paragraph. Also, the most important thing, specking of teachers abusing schools' facility, you might want to lower your tone on that one because (don't forget) our professor "almost" fulfill all the symptoms you provided XDD. You might want to give some examples of funding of other areas can be cut other than education, such as military, road construction, etc.
Overall, i think your essay is very good, but be aware of you topic sentences.
I think that you need more work on your structure. You should have a well thought out introduction with a thesis and strong ending conclusion. You could also organize your information.
ReplyDeleteYou talk about physical education not being important and talk about having a 5 star class room. I understand that it's important to have a good learning enviorment but don't you think that being healthy might improve how you perform on everything you do?
I think that you did a very good job with providing examples. Even though you could have supported with some numbers/or back up from some website. Just as mentioned on other comments a few spelling errors...and to go back and check the area where you mention about the teachers...I do agree with the physical education class. If they have much interest on exercising they can do it on their own time and that would get rid of having trouble learning because of lack of exercise. Lets see.. about the teachers doing all that work janitors should do id give you an A for that back up support. You are right, teachers are there to teach and help students out to succeed and focus on them and their work and what they can do to help. Not clean after them. They continued their education to teach not to clean!
ReplyDeleteYour paper was nice. I would say that overall you did a good job.=]!
This paper had many excellent points. I was very interested as a reader by all the points brought up. I never would have thought of the ideas that this author has stated. I agree that PE is an unnecessary class/credit. Having PE myself did nothing for me. I’m an athletic person and when I was in PE in school I did nothing. Kids are able to pass the class so easily without doing anything. I also thought it was a good idea that sports should stay for the kids own interest of being healthy. I have a really close friend that is a teacher and I know how frustrated she feels that she has to do extra work that is not in her job description. The author of this paper brought up a good point that is usually overlooked. Teachers have to clean their classrooms and take care of disinfecting their own classrooms. I know that my friend hates that the most. She would rather focus on creating a curriculum than have to clean her own classroom or come into her classroom without having to worry about it being a mess.
ReplyDeleteThis paper was really good and I liked the points that were brought up. These are points that are usually overlooked and they are something neither I nor many people would have thought of. The author did a great job of pointing out that there are problems with the budget cuts and also pinpointing specific ways to fix them or make it a little better. I didn’t really see many things wrong with this paper. To me it had a great thesis and great sentence structure.
